Radio show – The Great British Music Weekend

We’re heading back 30 years for this weeks show, between the 18th and 20th January 1991 Radio One booked out Wembley Arena for the Great British Music Weekend.

The event was broadcast live on Radio One and filmed as part of the Brit Awards that year. Organised by Jonathan King who was a big champion of up and coming bands at this time and regularly featured the likes of Cud and Ned’s in his newspaper column.

Each band got to play just for about 20 minutes with the exception of the headliner who played for about an hour. It worked pretty well surprisingly with little oppotunity to get bored, it’s just a shame it was at Wembley Arena which is easily London’s worst venue.

Friday night was a Madchester/Baggy night with Happy Mondays, James, The Farm, 808 State, Northside, Candyland and Beats International.

Saturday night, the gig yours truly attended, featured Billy Bragg (as special guest), Ride, Carter USM, Jesus Jones, New Model Army, The Wedding Present and The Cure..

Sunday night was the ‘rock’ night headlined by Ozzy Osbourne.

We play several live tracks from the event throughout the show.

In this episode you can also hear new tracks from Mogwai, Insides and Blanck Mass alongside classics by Slowdive, The Swirlies and Chapterhouse.
